A leadership team made up of game-changers
As a rule, corporate bios can be a little stale. So to give you fresh insight into the game-changers who lead Quantum Health, check out the lineup of bios below. You’ll get a candid look at some of the fun and fascinating things that make our leadership team unique. Just as important, you’ll get to know them on not simply a professional level—but on a personal level, too.
Kara Trott — Founder and CEO
And… action! A self-proclaimed movie buff, Kara loves films from Casablanca to Christmas Vacation, and as our founder and CEO she’s in the director’s chair at Quantum Health.
Having compiled a nearly complete collection of Alfred Hitchcock movies, Kara is more than capable of thrilling audiences in her own right. In fact, the innovative healthcare program she created is a bona fide blockbuster. By leading a two year study applying consumer behavior strategies to track patients and providers throughout the healthcare process, she brought to life the Quantum Health program that’s a smash hit with companies across the country. Prior to rolling out the red carpet on Quantum Health, Kara was a corporate attorney with the law firm Bricker & Eckler. Before that she worked as a strategic marketing consultant and project manager at RPA, an international consulting firm. She’s also earned a J.D. with honors from the Ohio State University College of Law and a B.A. in Politics and Philosophy from Ohio Wesleyan University. And while Kara doesn’t have any Oscars to her credit, she has been recognized for her business leadership as a winner of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2005), the National Association of Women Business Owners 2006 Visionary Award, and the 2008 Leader in Disease Management Award from Managed Healthcare Executive. Of course, for Kara, she’ll keep right on rolling—because the best is yet to come!
Randy Gebhardt — COO and President
Randy may not be baking cookies in a tree like his cartoon hero, Ernie, the Keebler Elf—then again, he’s got a pretty good reason not to.
As COO and President of Quantum Health, Randy keeps plenty busy overseeing all operational functions of the company. On any given day, Randy may be involved in creating and maintaining relationships with business partners, such as third party administrators, provider networks, and consultants, but at the end of the day he just wants to hang with the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda (his dream vacation). Once cast as the burp in a school play, Randy has made some other, more impressive noise following his grade school acting career. Namely, he’s earned a B.S. in Mathematical and Physical Sciences and an M.A. in Journalism, both from the Ohio State University; he’s managed two start-up organizations; served as President of RPA/Retail, Retail Marketing Group, and was president of a start-up organization of western style supermarkets in Russia. There’s more. He’s also co-authored two university textbooks on consumer behavior and retail marketing. After 20-plus years as an international marketing and business consultant, Randy cites his role in cultivating Quantum Health’s self-sustaining, self-healing culture as his greatest achievement. Whether it’s bringing in a live nativity scene for the company’s holiday party (goats and all), or openly addressing employee concerns and comments, Randy’s always cooking up ways to keep the quirky Quantum Health culture alive.
Jim Stark — Executive VP of Sales
His moustache bears resemblance to Yosemite Sam’s (his favorite cartoon character). He enjoys a well cooked elk risotto. He can’t fathom a life without his golf clubs. He is – by some accounts - the most interesting man at Quantum Health.
Jim Stark, our VP of Sales, has led an interesting life and he’s well-suited to lead the sales team at Quantum Health. Jim’s previous experience includes a stint as the National Health and Welfare Practice Director for Aon Consulting, past presidency and membership of the World Trade Club of San Francisco and time served as a board member on the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers. An officer and a gentleman (his favorite movie, by the way), Jim is a former U.S. Army Infantry Officer, holds a B.A. in modern European History, a teaching certificate from Benedictine University and completed course work towards an MBA at the University of Indiana. Following the best piece of advice he ever received, "Don't look back," Jim drives Quantum Health's sales force with a forward focus approach, continuing to expand strategic partnerships with various national insurance carriers and third party administrators.
Amy Crowell — Vice President Care Coordination
The only way to describe a proud owner of many pets is caring- and that’s Amy. Not only is caring a part of Amy’s nature, she has the track record to match it.
Amy has more than 30 years in the health care field at various organizations such as: Marion General Hospital, Northwest Ohio Physician Review Organization, HealthFirst, and Quantum Health. It’s no mystery that Amy knows patients, given her extensive experience in the healthcare industry. This vast knowledge enables her to seemingly read patients’ minds. With one super power under her belt, Amy would choose the ability to fly as a supplemental super power. After all, it would surely cut down her 70 miles round trip commute to work. Quantum Health’s core Care Coordination commitment is to provide in depth personal patient interactions– and Amy does her part to make this happen. By monitoring inbound calls from patients, providers and families, she ensures they receive the quality service that Quantum Health strives to provide its members.
Shannon Skaggs — Vice President Account Services
Expecting a different photo? You’re not alone. In fact, our Vice President of Account Services is well aware that Shannon is typically a girl’s name. Though the gender mix-up can be slightly awkward at times, Shannon always maintains his sense of humor—and his equilibrium.
No wonder then that juggling is one of his hidden talents. Matter of fact, it’s what Shannon does on a daily basis. From overseeing the production of Customer Engagement materials, to ensuring smooth implementation for clients, to managing our wellness initiatives, Shannon is one busy guy. His favorite quote from Albert Einstein, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler”, describes his philosophy of creating a simple and functional engagement processes for plan participants. When he’s not developing new ways to enhance participants’ experience, he’d prefer to have some quality couch time (his noted guilty pleasure). Experience as a Web Design and Development Manager at Central SBS, and a BS in Computer Art and Graphics Programming from Ashland University make Shannon a perfect fit as the genius behind Quantum Health’s innovative and creative approaches to Customer Engagement. We’re surely glad to have him on our team—and no, you can’t call him Shirley.
Sandy Freer — Director of Business Partner Relations
Sandy Freer knows two things quite well: The healthcare business and pig Latin. After two decades plus in the healthcare industry, it’s no surprise that Sandy knows the ins and outs and twists and turns that it entails.
Got questions on TPA related issues? Sandy has answers. Her time at CIGNA and Quantum Health has made her both a knowledgeable and credible source. By day Sandy can be seen diligently developing policies and procedures and workflows, but by night she’s probably devouring Chipotle, which she notes is her guilty pleasure. Sandy’s positive and caring demeanor fits in perfectly with the homegrown Quantum Health family culture; in fact, given the choice to have a super power, she’d want the ability to heal. While Sandy has many achievements (a BA from Wittenberg, an MBA from Capital University, and 20+ years in healthcare), she’s always looking towards the future—believing the best is yet to come. Ats-thay, Andy-say.
Terri Bishop, RN, CCM — Director of Clinical Services
“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.” – Charles Dickens. Those who know Terri know exactly why this is her favorite quote. Indeed, she’s spent a lifetime lightening the burdens of others.
As our Director of Clinical Service, Terri spends her days (and often her nights) developing and implementing clinical programs for high risk populations, enrollee education, communication with clients and overseeing direct case management. Put another way, she works like the dickens to help take the weight off the shoulders of our patients and their families. A graduate from the Ohio Valley School of Nursing with certification in case management and diabetes management, Terri’s extensive clinical background spans from orthopedics to cardiac care to palliative care to case management for a regional health plan. In addition, she’s spent years on the adjunct medical/dental staff of hospitals in Ohio and Illinois, working with medical staff and residency teaching programs at various hospitals. Terri was also the co-founder and administrator of the Ruth Helen Wolf Arthritis Center in Evanston, Illinois. As busy as she is, Terri’s stated (somewhat jokingly) that she’d like to be able to clone herself. And while having a second Terri is appealing, we’re grateful to have the original.
Brian Wenner — Director of Marketing
Who is Brian? Well, he’s bright, he’s bubbly, he’s boisterous (but only after his morning coffee) and he’s our Director of Marketing. A sailboat enthusiast, Brian is responsible for helping set the course for our company’s positioning and putting the wind in the sails of our strategic marketing initiatives.
Before bringing his 15+ years of experience to Quantum Health, Brian was Director of Marketing for UnitedHealthcare’s TPA, UMR. Prior to that, he held the role of Associate Research Manager at Parker Marketing Research and worked in product management at Convergys. His professional experience complimented with an MBA from Xavier University and a B.S. in Business from Miami University make him a wealth of healthcare marketing and consumer behavior knowledge. Not one to toot his own horn, Brian can play the tuba; nowadays, however, his passion is to trumpet the Quantum Health brand.
Mark W. Smith, CPA — Controller
Mark may be Quantum Health’s Controller, overseeing all corporate finance and accounting functions of the company, but he’s not your normal number cruncher. He has a sense of humor that fits in perfectly with the quirky Quantum Health culture.
Whether it’s through his witty emails or his knee-slapping quarterly report presentations at corporate meetings, he is legendary for putting flair and fun into financials. Mark’s credentials and experience are no laughing matter though, he brings over 30 years of finance and general business expertise, including 14 years in third party benefits administration and small group health insurance. Before bringing his accounting (and comedic) skills to our company, Mark worked as the divisional Director of Administration and Controller at CoreSource and earned a BS in Business Administration from The Ohio State University. Make no mistake about it: Mark is more than just a trusted CPA—he’s a true CFG (Certified Funny Guy).
Valerie Burnham — Director of Information Services
Stomp. Step. Shuffle. Slide. Valerie used to jazz and tap dance on the national competition stage. Now, as Director of Operations Development, she uses her energy and elan to make things click at Quantum Health. More to the point, she choreographs – and, at times, improvises – ways to improve our operational systems, processes and workflows.
Prior to joining our company in 2004, Valerie was a Decision Support Analyst at Mount Carmel Hospital Health System. She earned a BA in Psychology from The Ohio State University and has an AA in Biology and an AS in Chemistry from Sinclair Community College. No longer a competitive dancer, Valerie still has rhythm in her shoes and dances whenever she can find the time—that is when she’s not busy translating business user needs into application development and operational requirements. No matter the circumstances, we can always count on Valerie to be on her toes as she gracefully keeps our operations in perfect tempo.
